Past

The soul of Landen entered the world during the dark age as Nereus Von--whether or not he had other incarnations remains to be seen, but his incarnation as Nereus had been his most recent one. He had been born within the Von clan to a family that wasn't one of the nobles, but whom had enough money and connect to keep them from being one of the peasants. They had enough influence and clot to be invited to social events and even gather favors from the upper class, but for some within the family that was not enough. It was one thing to mingle among the elite. It was another to be one of them. They thought of raising their family status through marriage. It was not an unsound plan, and one that many other family of their same social status managed to pull off.

They tried to get everyone within the family to go along with this plan, but his father refused to allow others to control his heart. His parents tried to influence him to fall for those whom would help them with their family goals. They arranged him to encounter a numbers of available nobles, but he did not fall in love with any of them. No, the woman he ended up falling in love with. The woman whom ended up becoming his wife and the mother of his children was beneath him in every possible way. She was nothing more than a slave. Worse she was only human. His family told him that if he continue to take their relationship in the direction that he was that they would disown him. It was okay for him to fuck her. It was even fine for him to take her as his lover, but he was in no way to take her as his wife.

His father basically told his family to go fuck themselves by doing exactly what they forbid him from doing. He married the woman his family told him that he was not to. True to their word, they disowned him, but they thought that his infatuation with the human slave would fade with the pain of hunger and he would come crawling back home, begging them to take him back underneath their wings. It was impossible to know if that would happen because while his family had completely cut him off he had gained support from another family. The ironic part was that it was from one of the nobles families that his family had been so desperate to join. It had been the family whom owned the slave that he decided to marry. The head of the family was a romantic at heart, and the fact that he was willing to endure the uncertainty of poverty warmed her heart.

It was for that reason that she decided to adopt the human. Through, it probably wasn't the only reason. She knew what his family was trying to do and thought that the member they disowned succeeding where they failed was amusing. It was not surprising that once his family received news of this adoption that they decided that Nereus' father was no longer disowned, but his father disowned them. They wanted nothing to do with his wife when they believed she was nothing. He refused to allow them to have anything to do with her when they saw her as the key to getting into the world they dreamed of. This did not mean that his family ceased trying. They threw themselves at his wife--hoping that if they could make her fond of one of them that Nereus' father would forgive them for their unfortunate mistake.

His father deciding to take his wife away from the hounding of his family by moving his wife to a small village in the far north. He believed that moving to this village would deter his family from their continue attempts to wiggle back into his life. This village had nothing to offer and he believed that the benefit of returning to his good graces wouldn't make traveling to the village worthwhile. It was a gamble that paid off, and he and his wife settle into a happy life together. They had several children together--one of them was Nereus. He was a delight to his parents. Clever if not a bit cheeky. He, also, possessed a knack for magic that his siblings did not. While his parents did not care if their children had magic or not--they just happy that they were healthy--but, his father couldn't help feeling a tad bit pleased that one of his children had actually taken more after him than his wife.

Upon learning about Nereus' talents his parents decided to give him the best possible education. They soon realized that the best education wasn't within that small village, and with a heavy heart they shipped him back to the capitol where they knew that his father's family were waiting like hungry piranhas. They, however, took measure to protect him against their hounding by making information about his identity difficult to find. A ruse that the woman whom adopted Nereus' mother was more than willing to play along with. His father's family was lead to believe that Nereus was nothing more than one of the  peasant children  that the upper class are known to sponsor. It was enough to spark his father's family interest, but not enough to make them hound him the way they would if they had known the truth of his identity.

Nereus proved himself to be a quick study---picking up his lessons with little difficulties, and eventually his specialty was discovered. It was the ability to take possession of other living things. He did not control these living things like one control a puppet, but instead he moved his consciousness from his body to the form he wished to control. At first, he could only possess animals but over time he learned how to take control of other humanoid form. He didn't plan on taking control of another humanoids when he first did it. The idea that such a thing was possible never occurred to him, but desperation allowed him to use his ability in ways he didn't think was possible. He had received news that a noroci was terrorizing the village he had been born into.

It had already feasted upon the light of several of the villagers when Landen received news of its presence there. Without hesitation, he rushed to his family aid. There were those that believed he should have remained within the capitol. Those within the village were a lost cause as long as the noroci decided that it wanted them. At the time, no one had ever managed to kill a noroci--this task would only be done once during the end of the dark age. They believed that he was only signing his own death by going there. No, they believed he was agreeing to a fate worse than death. However, Nereus ignored their pleas. He could not just sit ideally by and allow his family to have a fate worse than death.

The journey took longer than he would have liked, and when he finally arrived at the village that idea was emphasized. The noroci had already feasted upon the light of the majority of the villagers. Only a handful of children remained--one of them was his sister. Nereus was heartbroken over the death of his family, but he did not allow himself to dwell within his grief. There were still the children to save and even if one hadn't been related to him Nereus couldn't just leave them to the noroci to do with as it pleased. He turned to face the noroci upon the field of battle. He managed to hold his own against the creature for some time--much to the noroci amusement. However, like any other whom faced such a creature upon the field of battle the noroci eventually gained the upper hand.

The creature pinned Nereus to the ground, straddling his waist and was preparing to steal his light. Immediately Nereus' mind begun to panic. He didn't wanted to die. He didn't want to become a former shell of himself---lost within the madness that one entered when their light is stolen from them. More so, he did not want his little sister to endure such a fate. She was the only family he had left and if he failed to save her than he really would have nothing. It is unclear whether it was the fear of dying or failing his sister that allowed him to take possession of one of the children, but that what Nereus did. The noroci was incredibly amused by this and decided to spare him.

It, however, made it impossible for him to return to his original body by beheading it. The creature told him that he could either give the body back to the original owner or smother--as noroci put it--his light and keep possession of the body. His first thought was to give the body back to its original owner. He was just a child with an entire life a head of him. He could not steal that away from him. There were those among his people whom would have said that Nereus was just as much of  youth as that child, but within his mind he had a chance to taste life while that child had not. He was about to leap from the body when he felt a hand within his. He looked over to find his sister hand within his. She was sobbing. She begged him not to leave her alone. He could not ignore her tears nor could he leave his sister alone within the world.

Nereus decided to remain within the body. A decision that please his younger sister whom told him that the original owner of the body didn't have very much light to smother anyways. She went on to tell him how he was a cruel and vicious person whom enjoyed tormenting others, and that he had been the one whom brought the noroci to the village. He had wanted to watch the noroci kill every last one of them, but he would later learn that wasn't the truth. Yes, someone had brought the noroci to the village to watch it kill every last one of the villagers, but the one whom responsible was his sister not the boy whom body he gained possession of. However, many centuries passed before he learned this truth.

At the time, he believed his sister was nothing more than a little girl traumatized over the events that just transpired and decided to take her away from the village and back to the capitol. There he started anew. He could not tell them whom he was. They would not understand why he decided to keep the body and his sister would be left alone. He and his sister both proved to be quite the prodigy when it came to magic. He because he remembered everything he had learned before he gained access of his body. His sister, on the other hand, was a natural prodigy. Nereus and his sister were inseparable. Many contributed their extreme closeness to the fact they both survived the horrors of what the noroci did to their home village. They became lovers and his sister eventually learned the secrets of ascension.

It was a secret that Nereus did not discover, but he would escape the fate that those witches whom do not ascend face through his ability. Once again, it was his sister whom encouraged him to abandon his body for another. She told him that if he did not that he would leave her all alone and that he promised to always look after her and if he died he wouldn't be able to keep his promise. She even went through the effort to find someone whom he wouldn't feel as guilty over possessing. A man, whom she claimed had committed many horrible crimes. He would be doing the universe a favor by ending his existence. He did as she asked and took control of that body and continued to do so over the centuries when it became clear that his currant body was at the end of its life. He eventually jumped from one body to another without any coaxing from his sister.

He, also, eventually jumped from one body to another for reason other than escaping death. He did so because taking control a body had its benefit for achieving a particular goal, or merely because his sister decided that she wished to fuck someone and they refused her. This went on for centuries until one day Nereus truly looked at himself within a mirror. He was horrified by what he saw. He had became a monster and the truth of his sister followed soon after. He learned that she had been the one that brought the noroci to the village and that the people whom she had him possess were not as guilty as she had lead him to believe. In fact, they were very innocent. He confronted her and she did not deny his accusations.

She told him that he was not as much as a victim as he trying to pretend he was. Yes, at first she had to convince him to commit these horrible deeds but eventually he came to do them on his own because he thought of nothing more than her pleasure and by extension his own. He told her no more. He was not going to take possession of any more body. He was going to do what he should have centuries ago and allow death to eventually take him than he would return to the goddess side and allow her to punish him as she will. Nereus' sister told him that he would do no such things. She told him that he had been leaping from one body to another for so long that not to do so when death is upon him would be impossible. He decided that the only way he could be successful is if he escaped his sister's hold.

Nereus fled with his sister's words following him. She told him that no matter where he went that she would find and gain possession of him once again. He would always belong to her. He eventually found himself upon a ship. He did not know where it was heading, but decided where it next ported would be the place he would end up living out the rest of his days. That ship, however, encountered a horrible storm that sent the ship many miles off course. Worse yet, the ship was severally damaged and many on-board was killed or fatally injured--including Nereus. His sister's words about him not being able to succumb to death when its upon him being impossible proved to be true. He went to leap from his dying form to the form of one of the adults whom managed to survive the storm intact.

However, he did not seize possession of this body. Instead, he gained possession of a newborn baby whom had been born during the chaos of the storm. He was, at first, outraged by this. He had never failed to take possession of the body that he wished to, but it became clear to him that he actually succeeded with his goal. He knew that he wouldn't stop jumping from body to body as long as he hold the memories of his life before he took possession of that body. Taking control over a newborn meant relinquishing his memories and starting a new. He would still have his specialty, but he would not have the baggage that was associated with his previous life--a baggage that made it impossible for him to embrace death.

He did not know if he was going to be just another causality of the storm, and a part of him hoped that he world. However, that turned out to be the case. He found himself floating upon a piece of wood and ended up being washed ashore The Storm Island. This island was home to the Cahille clans---a lost witch clan that the clans of the mainland forgot existed. The Cahille took Nereus in as one of their own and named him Landen.

Present

Landen's third childhood was quite a happy one. He was very much loved by his adopted family, whom encouraged him in every way possible. They did not tell him that he was adopted, but he suspected it. He eventually learned that his suspicion were correct. He discovered how he came to be upon the island--that he had been the only survivor of a ship wreck and he was found washed ashore as a new born baby. He did not learn that he had been an immortal whom managed to escape death by leaping from one body to another, but that was only because his adopted family did not have this information. Landen was extremely upset over this news.

He felt betrayed. There was a part of him that believed that everything else they told him was a lie, and he thought of running away. He even went as far as to pack his bags, but he eventually realized that he was being silly. They might have lied about his identity but that their feelings for him were not false. They considered him family and, truth be told, he felt the same about them. He decided to stay, but his mind kept going to his birth family. He couldn't help wondering whom they were and if they loved him as much as his adopted one. He decided that he wished to find these answers, but he isn't certain how he will share this desire with his family. He doesn't want them to believe that he is rejecting them.
